Big Sky Montana

Well, we just returned from a trip to Big Sky Montana and I have to say that Montana is one of the most beautiful places I've ever been to. I accompanied my husband on a business trip and while he was sitting through boring meetings, I was out enjoying the scenery or relaxing in the Lodge hot tub.

We stayed at a ski resort in Big Sky called the Huntley Lodge at Big Sky Resort. It was a wonderful place. It was beautiful in September and I can't even imagine what it looks like in the winter months during ski season.

We flew into Bozeman airport (BZN) and the drive down to Big Sky was about an hour. You can expect a very scenic drive with hairpin curves and harrowing hill climbs. On the ride down we noticed white crosses every so often dotted alongside the road.I thought that they were markers of where people had been killed, my hubby thought they were reflectors. In truth, they were markers of highway deaths that had occured along that route. Well, let me tell you, on highway 191 between Bozeman and Big Sky, it was about a 40 mile drive and I counted over 50 markers. And those were the ones that were obvious to me as we were driving along. It was shocking and very sad that so many people have lost their lives on that road. Slow down people!

Anyhow, we arrived to the resort after about an hour drive, and it was just spectacular. Tucked alongside Lone Mountain, with cabins, lodges and other hotels, it was just breathtaking. The Village consisted of shops, restaurants, bars, base camp and the lodging facilities, all within walking distance. I'm not a skier, but I have to tell you it sure made me want to become one.

The Huntley Lodge was very nice. Some people in reviews had rated it "old and outdated", but it IS old and outdates, so what are you going to do? It's a ski resort for godsakes, not a 5 star hotel in Manhattan. The rooms were spacious and clean. The beds were comfortable. There was a mini "kitchenette" which consisted of an extra sink, mini fridge and a coffee maker. Sufficient enough. The hotel had an indoor hot tub which was connected to an outdoor pool. There was another outdoor pool and two outdoor hottubs on the other side of the hotel. The sauna, steam room and gym area were very clean and extremely nice. Chet's restaurant was about what you would expect for a hotel restaurant, quality and cost-wise.

We wanted to horseback ride while we were there and so we found a place called "Jake's Horses". It wasn't the most immaculate place but come on. You're in the middle of the country and it is horse stables...it's not going to look pretty, but let me tell you, once you saddle up and cross the street, the scenery is like nothing I have ever experienced. We rode over mountains (literally), through rivers and across meadows. Our horse led us down tiny paths alongside sheer cliffs where one misstep could have sent us hurling over a 1000 foot edge. It was scary and exhilarating. I loved it. My horse, Cash, was gentle and obedient. I had never rode before and I had no problems at all with him. Our guide, Julie, was very knowledgable and friendly and she was an expert rider. I highly recommend Jakes' Horses if you are ever interested in horseback riding in Montana.

We ate dinner at Bucks T-4 restaurant, which was nice, but in my opinion, over priced......They serve a famous 'game' menu along with typical restaurant fare. Expect a triple digit dinner if you are dining with a companion and have a glass of wine or a drink.....

The weather in mid September was very warm. It was 82 the day we left, which was unusual for Montana. The evenings got very chilly, down in the 30's.

If you are looking for something relaxing and different to do, I highly recommend a trip to Big Sky and if you are a skier, then you have to visit for sure.
